In 1999 I began my career in the art world at the Luhring Augustine Gallery in Chelsea- and at that time it was a much smaller sphere. Over the years as the art world scaled up and our business grew, I had a large role in facilitating the business’s growth. Below are some examples.
Was hired as the receptionist in 1999- within a year was managing 3 artists. Within 8 years I rose to the rank of Senior Director with 7 artists under my management.
The staff grew from 6 to 25 within 15 years of my hiring. I added more mid-level roles to support senior staff and owners of the gallery.
Created staff morale programs and opportunities for enrichment both in and out of the gallery. One year I organized a staff art exhibition titled Luhring Augustine Presents.
I oversaw most of the gallery’s branding and identity projects including the design of the website, invitations, posters, and book publications.
In typical day I made or took at least 20 phone calls and I responded to or drafted 150-200 emails.
In a year I initiated or oversaw over $25 millions in sales.
I planned 3-5 dinners and receptions annually, choosing venues, designing the environment and menus, drafting guest lists, and creating seating arrangements. Some events took place in other cities in and out of the US.
I placed over 50 artworks in museum and public collections around the world.
It can become highly competitive to win the right to represent an artist- especially established ones with fertile markets. While they didn’t always stay under my management, I was a part of the courtship of many artists over the course of my tenure. Glenn Ligon, Elad Lassery, Ragnar Kjartansson, and Jeff Elrod were a few who I brought under representation.
Art fairs became a big part of our business over the years, as collectors became more accustomed to buying in this atmosphere. Each presentation was tailored for the context- with fresh offerings from our most sought after artists. Fairs are not only important for generating sales, they are also important for connecting with colleagues, seeing new art from around the world, and meeting new clients.
With the gallery I regularly participated in Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach, Expo Chicago, FIAC Paris, FOG Art + Design, San Francisco, Frieze London and New York, Zona Maco in Mexico City, and we also maintained a presence at TEFAF and the Art Dealer’s Association of Amerca’s New York fairs.
Finding new and interesting exhibition opportunities for my artists served not only to keep them inspired but to continue to expand their audience. One of the highlights of my experiences in this regard was traveling to Cuba with Larry Clark and the curator Philip Larratt-Smith, to exhibit his photographs at the National Photo Museum.
